Purification and implementation of water are two major factors in the overall health and well being of an area.Water borne diseases (such as dysentry and cholera) account for approximately 3.575 million deaths per year. Almost all of these cases occur in Africa, but countries such as India and Bangladesh also suffer these, making this a global issue. My native Texas in 2011 has experienced its worst drought since 1895. The drought has cost Texas an estimated $1.5 billion in potential agriculture and livestock. Diarrheal diseases such as dysentry account for 1.5 million child deaths per year, making it the second leading cause of child death (5-under) per year.
The primary method of purifying water is filtration. Filtration works by flowing water through a granular bed such as sand or charcoal. Similiar to the way water flows through rocks in a river and coming out cleaner on the other side, the granular bed serves to trap the unwanted sediment in the water. This works both chemically and physically. Chlorine ions within the water are electrostaticaly encouraged to break their bond with the water. Although this serves well when removing freely- moving- sediments, this does not however account for the waste that is build up. Cryptosporidiosis is another pathogen that, ironically, builds up on the filters of water purifiers.
In order to purify water effectively, we preposed using electrolysis seperation and re-bonding. Water enters a chamber where it subjected to a electric current. Hydronium ions and oxygen ions are electrically attracted to the cathode and anode. From there they( due to natural bouyancy of oxygen and hydrogen) enter another chamber where the gases are then subject to another electric charge. They then recombine to form ( theoretically) drinkable water.
